Legend[]

There are several origin stories for Shuten-Dōji, ranging from him being a former human monk who was cursed by the lovers he spurned, to being the demonic child of Yamata no Orochi. After becoming a Oni, he gathered a cadre of powerful followers and established a base on Mount Oe. From his mountain stronghold, Shuten-Dōji and his Oni would launch raids on the capital, killing people, devouring cattle and taking women away to be slaves. Eventually, the famous Onmyodo Abe no Seimei found out the identity of the Oni's leader and the emperor sent Minamoto-no-Raiko and his valiant samurai to defeat Shuten-Dōji, a feat they achieved by disguising themselves as monks and offering blessed liquor to the notoriously sakè-loving demon, causing him to become weak and vulnerable when Raiko finished him off.

Old texts describe Shuten-Dōji as a 50 foot tall Oni with red head, five horns and fifteen eyes, as well as limbs of different color (white and black legs, yellow and blue arms). When Raiko cut off his head, Shuten-Dōji still lived long enough to attempt to bite Raiko's head off, only to fail, as the samurai wore two helmets at once.
