Legend[]

The Soroban-Bōzu or Soroban-Kozō is a yōkai that appeared in the town of Tanba, which is now apart of the Kyoto prefecture. It made a crackling sound, similar to that of an abacus near a large tree near the roadside. And when anyone checked behind the tree to see what was making the noise, no one was there. It was said that its true identity was a mischievous tanuki, but it was also believed to be the spirit of a young monk who hanged themself on a nutmeg tree after they were scolded by a head priest for making a mathematical error.

Trivia[]

  • A statue of Soroban-Kozō appears as one of the numerous bronze statues made around Sakaiminato, to keep Kani-Bōzu from being lonely and as a tribute.[3]
