Legend[]
One hot summer day in the Yōzei Temple, the Suisei-no-Okina, an old man yōkai the size of 3 shaku wearing a light yellow-colored kamishimo appeared and stroked the face of a man sleeping. When the man awoke, he saw the Suisei-no-Okina on his face, but didn’t say anything as he felt it would make the situation worse, so he pretended to be asleep until the old man left, wandering to the edge of the pond and then disappeared.
Because the pond was left unclean for too long, so much that multiple weeds were growing from it, that people thought it might be home to a monster. This rumor scared everyone who heard of it as they were afraid of the mysterious old man who probably emerged from this pond. A brave samurai volunteered to capture the old man, prepared a rope, and waited for him to come.
Then, just after midnight, the samurai felt something cold on his face, so he grabbed his rope, tied the mysterious being up, and called out loudly for everyone to come and see what he captured.
They found the Suisei-no-Okina tied up, who bitterly requested that they fill a basin with water. When it was brought to him, the Suisei-no-Okina explained that he was a spirit of water before happily jumping into the basil, no longer visible with only the rope remaining. The water was then poured into the pond, and the old man yōkai was never seen again.
