The mysterious sound of taiko drums being beating in midnight is known as Tanuki-Bayashi or Bakabayashi. Those who try to look for the source of the sound can’t find anything. It is thought to be one of the Seven Wonders of Honjo and is attributed to tanuki drumming on their bellies or scrotums.
Long ago, a poet spend the night at a temple in Chikushi and was informed by the temple's chief priest that the tanuki would be gathering and beating their bellies near the bamboo thicket that night. The poet could hear the drumming, but by the next day when he came to the grove to investigate the sound, he found nothing but a hole that the tanuki made their home in.
Another story tells of a koto player in Tokyo who would play alongside a tanuki beating its belly like a drum on moonlit nights.
