The Great Yōkai War (妖怪大戦争 (ようかいだいせんそう) Yōkai Dai-Sensō), is a live-action film directed by Takashi Miike released on August 16th, 2005. It is the first official reboot of the Yōkai Monsters Series.

About[]

Shigeru Mizuki, Hiroshi Aramata, Natsuhiko Kyōgoku and Miyuki Miyabe served as creative consultants on the film, collectively credited as the "Kwai Producer Team". Many allusions are made to Mizuki's works, including the main character taking a trip to Shigeru Mizuki Road. Aramata also received a writing credit for the use of Yasunori Katō, the main character of his book series Teitō Monogatari, as the film's antagonist. Shigeru Mizuki also made the comic adaptation of the film.

It is a loose remake of the Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare (The Great Yōkai War) in 1968 although similarities or direct connections between the two are minor, though the Kasa-Bake makes reference to the first war when being asked to fight again.

The Great Yōkai War: Guardians, which was also directed by Miike and written by Aramata, was released in August 2021. The 2021 film officially introduced Dai-Majin while Miike was trying to reboot the Daimajin franchise along with his The Great Yōkai War and Gamera the Brave, however his Daimajin project was scrapped due to the box office result of the Gamera film, leading to cancellations of subsequent Gamera and Daimajin projects. However, Miike's project was redeveloped as the 2010 television drama Daimajin Kanon, and Miike made Daimajin to appear in the 2021 film, along with Gamera in its spinoff prequel novelization The Great Yōkai War: Guardians: Side Story: Heian Hyakkitan.
