Tsurube-Bi (つるべ火 Tsurubebi, lit. drooping flame) are a breed of Yōkai in the GeGeGe no Kitarō manga and anime franchise. In the 1968 anime and some manga chapters, Tsurube-Bi is depicted as an individual character.
Appearance[]
The Tsurube-Bi is floating fireball with a face, usually that of an old man.
In the 2018 anime, Tsurube-Bi's roughly the same, being a ball of red-orange fire with droopy eyes and a nose. Their flames make three tails, two short ones on the side and one long one at the top of their head.
Personality[]
History[]
Tsurube-Bi often appear to assist Kitarō, performing a variety of tasks including serving as a light in dark places, shining bright enough to trick some enemies into believing it's daytime, or even attacking enemies with flames.
While most adaptations depict numerous Tsurube-Bi, some stories (particularly from the manga and the 1968 anime) depicted an individual Tsurube-Bi as an ally. Tsurube-Bi had speaking roles in two 1968 series episodes, Obake Nighter and The Yōkai Army.
The first anime also featured a similar character, the Yōkai Lamp (妖怪ランプ), a Tsurube-Bi who acted as a light for Kitarō's house and occasionally aided him in fights.
2007 Anime[]
Two Tsurube-Bi stay within the stone lamps at the entrance to Yōkai Yokochō, where Neko-Musume passes to enter. A Tsurube-Bi resides in the GeGeGe House, where Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji utilize it as a stove to heat water. Another pair of Tsurube-Bi appear residing in lamps by the river of Yōkai Yokochō.[1] On another day, the pair of Tsurube-Bi stationed at the entrance to Yōkai Yokochō burn brightly.[2]
The Great Yōkai War[]
The Great Yōkai War: Guardians[]
Tsurube-Bi appeared in the manga adaptation of the film.
Powers and Abilities[]
Fire Manipulation: Being a fire Yōkai, Tsurube-Bi is able to generate and control fire, as well as getting weaker if his body is doused or blown away.[3]
Legend[]
Tsurube-Bi is a fire yōkai depicted in the Sekien Toriyama's Gazu Hyakki Yagyō. They are a bluish-white fire with a humanoid face seen dangling up and down from tree branches in the Shikoku and Kyushu regions.
The true nature of Tsurube-Bi is unknown, but it has been speculated to be a form of bioluminescence fungi growing on trees or bacteria growing in decaying leaves.
They are thought to be related to Tsurube-Otoshi, as they share similar habitats and behavior. Another Yōkai with a similar behavior is the Yakanzuru.
Trivia[]
- Tsurube-Bi first appears in the manga chapter Mōryō and the 1968 series episode Obake Nighter.
