Legend[]
Umizatō is a yōkai that appears at sea, resembling a blind man carrying a biwa on its back. They beckon passing ships and leave them shipwrecked or swallowing them whole, so they are suspected to be related to the Umibōzu due to their similar behavior.
A master sailor named Tokuzo once encountered an Umizatō when he was young. He went out to sea alone, and as black clouds appeared and a giant wave formed, a man with a shaven head appeared on the sea and asked Tokuzo if he was frightened. Tokuzo admitted that he was frightened, and the man told him that he should never sail during the end of the month before disappearing as the weather calmed down. Tokuzo rushed back to shore and told his story to the locals, who didn't believe him except for an old man, who said that he encountered an Umizatō and that if you listened to what he said, he would leave you alone. Ever since then, Tokuzo never sailed during the month's end because sea yōkai like Umizatō and Funa-Yūrei would appear.
In another story from 1934, a man returning from a research trip to Kuroshima Island discovered an Umizatō on the sea. He first assumed the Umizatō was swimming but noticed that he was standing above the water. After he noticed the Umizatō following the boat at the same speed the boat traveled and letting out a loud yawn, that's when he realized the man was a yōkai before retreating to the cabin in fear.
