Plot[]
In an attempt to escape the hard life of yōkai battles, pollution and poverty, Kitarō, Medama-Oyaji and Nezumi-Otoko decide to find a deserted island somewhere and take a vacation. Nezumi-Otoko has already prepared a raft and suggests they build a smaller one for growing beans so they won't go hungry. After a few days out at sea, the salt water has ruined their garden and rotted all the bean sprouts. They are lost at sea with no food or water.
That night, while Kitarō is on lookout, he sees strange figures rising from the ocean and pouring salt water on their crops. He captures one as they try to run and sees that it is a Funa-Yūrei. Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko interrogate him and learn that his group were once normal salarymen when their boat was attacked by Funa-Yūrei three years ago. They were then turned into Funa-Yūrei by Umizatō, a yōkai who recruits people lost at sea by stealing their souls and keeping them in jars and forces them to scavenge for him. Kitarō agrees to retrieve their souls from the bottom of the sea, which will return them to normal.
Kitarō swims to the sea floor and finds the jars guarded by a whale shark. After a brief scuffle, he subdues the shark with his hair techniques and frees the souls. He resurfaces and reboards the raft, but it is then destroyed by a wave created by Umizatō. Umizatō attacks Kitarō and tries to swallow his head, but Kitarō bites into his neck and swallows his Adam's apple. Umizatō slowly lost his powers after Kitarō freed the souls, so he falls to the bottom of the sea defeated.
Kitarō and the others, including the ex-Funa-Yūrei, swim to a nearby island and are soon rescued by a passing ship. Nezumi-Otoko suggests they go after Umizatō's treasure as Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji just glare at him.
