Warai-Jishi (笑い獅子 Warai-Jishi, lit. Laughing Lion) is a lion-like yōkai.
Appearance[]
Warai-Jishi resembles a man with big hands and a large head of a lion. His eyes are big and glossy, their ears droop down like a dog, and their nose is upturned. Their mouth has big and blocky teeth. Their skin is a faded, dark green, while their eyebrows, moustache, goatee, and nose hairs are a light tan. Their kimono is black with white floral patterns tied with a red sash with different floral patterns, and their haori is a dark gray.

Warai-Jishi was an attendant of the Yōkai Yammit, an international gathering of yōkai in Beijing. He sat to the left of Tetsubin-Kajiri and above Shōmenki.

When a lion head used in lion dances become old and is discarded, it sometimes come to life as the Warai-Jishi and take up residence in abandoned houses in the mountains. When people approach it, it laughs “Shishishishi.” If you laugh back, you must run away immediately, or else it will bite your head off.
Trivia[]
- In August 16, 2015, to celebrate the ten year anniversary of The Great Yōkai War, a screening of the film was held at the Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Ibaraki. There was also an exhibit showcasing some of the masks from the film, and one of them was Warai-Jishi's.[1]
