The Yōkai Grand Elder (
Appearance[]
The Yōkai Grand Elder resembles a large, disembodied head of an old man around his 80's. He is seen inside a ornate mikoshi palanquin carried by four Tateyama-Gaeru. It's unknown whether he was physically inside of it or just a projection inside, and also if he was only a head or had a full body.
Personality[]
The Yōkai Grand Elder is a cheerful old man, but also makes sure to tell his subordinates about how bad and foolish the concept of war really is.
History[]
The Great Yōkai War[]
After the Kikai crisis is dealt with, the Yōkai Grand Elder's mikoshi opens up, and he gives a speech on the foolishness of war.
The Great Yōkai War: Guardians[]
Yōkai Grand Elder made a brief cameo appearance in its comic adaptation.
Trivia[]
- The Yōkai Grand Elder is played by one of the producers of the film and yōkai researcher, Shigeru Mizuki. The real Mizuki is directly mentioned earlier on the film, via the existence of Shigeru Mizuki Road and his artwork, Kawatarō referencing Ittan-Momen's role in the GeGeGe no Kitarō series, Shōjō detecting Yōkai Activity with his hair, and the general story being a loose adaptation of the Shonen Magazine chapter of the same name. His role in the film is also a meta-reference to how Shigeru Mizuki was a key figure in exposing yōkai to modern Japanese pop culture, and his words even mirroring Mizuki's anti-war sentiment.
- General descriptions of The Yōkai Grand Elder are presumably based on Sanmoto Gorōzaemon at the climax of Ino Mononokeroku.
- The "daiō" part of his name is a pun to the Japanese term "daiō" which stands for "great king".
