Plot[]

Kitarō and Medama-Oyaji walk in the field, and discuss how the economic recession in Japan has made yōkai sadder. Nezumi-Otoko appears and tells Kitarō he's been earning a living by working part-time, by cutting down trees and grass to make way for a home near a bamboo grove. Suddenly, a horde of aedes mosquitos appear, but they only sting Nezumi. Other people who work part-time are also attacked by the mosquitos, specifically while having lunch inside. Kitarō and Nezumi go to the GeGeGe House to discuss, and Konaki-Jijii assumes the mosquitos attacked because their home, the bamboo grove, was being torn down.

Kitarō goes back to the grove to investigate and finds three snakes in the shape of an S.O.S message. Kitarō also finds a nearby sign for a pathway to the house of someone named Kanebayashi. Kanebayashi, after meeting Kitarō who protests the halting of building the house, has him kicked out. After that, Nezumi-Otoko visits Kanebayashi's house, however he finds the man bed-ridden. Kanebayashi's maid tells Nezumi that after they ate cooked bamboo shoots, they started to feel feverish, and the man even grew bamboo shoots out of his arm! Nezumi-Otoko says that he can get Kitarō to cure them, but only if they pay him 100,000 yen. On the contrary, Kitarō doesn't actually know whay Kanebayashi's disease is, so Medama-Oyaji clarifies it's Bamboo Shoot Disease. This disease starts from the hands, slowly turning them into bamboo! This disease is caused by the yōkai Mannen-Dake.

When Kitarō, Nezumi, and Kanebayashi's maid went outside to see the bamboo shoots, the former two get attacked after Nezumi attempts to cut down the plants with a saw abd Kitarō hits them with his Hair Needles and Finger Guns. After Medama-Oyaji is chased by the Mannen-Dake versions of Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko, he goes to the GeGeGe House, and gets advised by Konaki-Jijii to take a bath to cool down his own steam. After Medama listens, Konaki says that they should burn down Kanebayashi's house to burn the Mannen-Dake as well, but Sunakake-Babaa quickly shuts that idea down since there Kitarō and Nezumi are still Mannen-Dake. Sunakake whispers a different plan, which leads them to the house of the villain Kamaitachi, however he agrees with their idea.

Meanwhile, Nezumi-Otoko (as a Mannen-Dake) sucks the life out of everyone near Kanebayashi's house, steals their wallets, and makes them turn into more Mannen-Dake. When Kitarō's friends arrive, Kamaitachi tries to cut down the Mannen-Dake, but they instantly regenerate and make his new sickle claws break! Kitarō reveals that he isn't evil like the rest of the Mannen-Dake, and is able to track down what sent the power to the bamboo near Kanebayashi's- Kanebayashi's maid! Konaki-Jijii jumps on the maid, making her confess. Before vanishing in an explosion, Kanebayashi's maid reveals herself as Take-no-Sei, a spirit that has been protecting the bamboo for hundreds of year, seeking vengeance on her master for their destruction. Nezumi-Otoko turns back into a hanyō, and him and the rest of the Kitarō Family wave goodbye to Kamaitachi.
