Yama-Oni (山鬼 Yama-Oni, lit. Mountain Demon) is a Yōkai and stock character appearing in the GeGeGe no Kitarō franchise.

2007 Anime[]
Yama-Oni appeared in episode #25 of the fifth anime adaptation, as one of the many participants of the sports festival, representing the Northern Japan team.[1]
He later appears in GeGeGe no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!. Yama-Oni appears as one of the multitude of Yōkai parading through cities due to Yato-no-Kami's influence. He is later returned to where he came from after Hana agrees to follow Yato-no-Kami.[2]
2018 Anime[]
Yama-Oni was featured in the 2023 movie The Birth of Kitarō: Mystery of GeGeGe.

Yama-Oni were oni that lived far in the mountains. Hunters would offer them food in exchange for helping them hunt animals. While there are many stories of the Yama-Oni, they were extremely few in number. So they were often found dead in the mountains during the Meiji period.
A story of the Yama-Oni told of a hunter who stayed in a mountain hut. He woke up to find a Yama-Oni resting on the campfire embers. As the Yama-Oni tormented him by repeating what was on his mind, the hunter tried to relight the campfire. When the Yama-Oni copied him, one of the branches it broke caught on fire and hit him in the face. The Yama-Oni ran off screaming about his burnt face and saying that there was nothing more terrible than a human.
