Legend[]
Yama-Oroshi is a tsukumogami born from a grater who lives deep in the mountains. The Japanese word "oroshi" not only means "grater", but also means "a strong wind blowing down from mountains". So when mysterious winds occurred in villages, the cause was attributed to the Yama-Oroshi breathing, which was ten thousand times stronger than that of any human. Its appearance may derive from an unnamed porcupine-like yōkai depicted in the Hyakki Yagyō Emaki scroll.
The Wakan Sansai Zue introduced a monster called a Yamaarashi, also known as Yama-Oyaji, they are said to live deep in the mountains and form flocks that can cause harm as the hair on their bodies is as sharp as needles. If you can catch one, their hair can be used as hairpins. Because of their similar sounding names, Yama-Oroshi might derive from Yamaarashi.
