Yama-Otoko inhabit the mountains of the Shizuoka Prefecture. They are giant humanoid yōkai with the shortest approximately 1.8 meters and the largest around 6 meters tall.
Whenever someone walks along a mountain path with a heavy load on their back, a Yama-Otoko would sometimes appear and offer to carry the load for them. They don't accept money when they are offered payment for their service, but as they're known to be drinkers, will happily accept a drink offered to them.
Once, a man named Matazō was on his way to call for a doctor for a sick person, and in his haste he tripped and fell into the bottom of a dale, where he was unable to move. A Yama-Otoko appeared and carried Matazō onto his back and took him to the doctor's doors before leaving. Out of gratitude, Matazō filled a bamboo canister with sake and went to the mountain to place it at the bottom of the valley, where two Yama-Otoko happily drank from it.
