Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters (
About[]
Double Featuring Poster of Gamera vs. Viras and Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters.
The film was released to Japanese theaters on March 20, 1968 on a double bill with Gamera vs. Viras, the fourth installment in the Gamera franchise which temporary improved financial difficulty of Daiei Film and contributed in productions of subsequent tokusatsu films especially Dai-Majin and Yōkai Monsters Series franchises, along with live-action adaptations of Kazuo Umezu's horror mangas.
Designs of yōkai were mostly based on ones by Shigeru Mizuki (who was in charge of the comic adaptation of this film), which originate in Gazu Hyakki Yagyō by Toriyama Sekien. Designs of some yōkai, most notably Aobōzu, were uniquely developed for this film via influences from the Akado Suzunosuke. Additionally, Hifuki-Babaa and Tonzura were original creations where the former was based on Fukkeshi-Babaa but with contrasting characteristics.
It was alternatively titled as The Hundred Monsters for international distributions.
