Yomotsu-Mono' (ヨモツモノ Yomotsumono, lit. Underworld Thing) is a gigantic, flying yōkai beast appeared as a supporting antagonist in the 2005 film The Great Yōkai War.
Appearance[]
It is a gigantic, quadrupedal creature to be a size of a mountain. It has a complex of industrial factory both internally and externally.
It resembles either a reptilian or an amphibian in general with an unproportionally large head with relatively small limbs and wings. It also possesses a series of tendril-like body parts aside from its tail. It emits bluish glows from its mouth and body.
Personality[]
It is an accumulation of vengeful spirits which eventually became a Tsukumogami by intaking negative emotions of humans and was empowered by Yasunori Katō.
History[]
It served as a supporting antagonist, and its internal complex was featured as the final battleground of the film while it itself was not focused in the plot.
Yasunori Katō used it to create a legion of Kikai to serve him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Levitation: Despite its size, Yomotsu-Mono can freely fly even without using its wings. It also gains propulsion by emitting blue jets from its body.
Smoke Emission: It can emit a vast quantity of exhaust fumes which can desecrate surrounding environments and buildings to barren wastelands. The fumes also produces fiery explosions.
Electricity: Yomotsu-Mono can both intake and emit electricity.
Fire Emission: As being a living factory, Yomotsu-Mono can emit flames.
Kikai Manufacturing: With its internal factory, Yomotsu-Mono can entrap Yōkai and manufacture them into a legion of Kikai.
Trivia[]
- During its first appearance at a castle, a witness called Yomotsu-Mono "Gamera" as the yōkai also emits jets to fly.[1] Gamera's voice effects were also used for its roars.[2]
- It was designed by Taketomo Hyaku who also designed various Yōkai in the film. Hyaku also participated in a number of Yōkai and horror and tokusatsu productions including GeGeGe no Nyōbō.
- In the manga adaptation by Shigeru Mizuki, Nanja-Monja appeared instead of Yomotsu-Mono.
- The Yōkaijū appeared in the 2021 film The Great Yōkai War: Guardians bears both similar and contrasting backgrounds and characteristics with Yomotsu-Mono.
