Yosuzume Illustration

Illustration of Yosuzume by Shigeru Mizuki.

The Yosuzume are sparrow yōkai that appear to travelers walking down the street at night, chirping with a " chi-chi-chi" cry. It is said that catching a Yosuzume will cause you night blindness.

In the Tanokuchi and Toyama villages, these yōkai are considered a bad omen, so travelers would recite a chant to ward them off. Bad luck was also said to happen if a Yosuzume jumped into your sleeve, so people who passed along paths where Yosuzume appeared would hold their sleeves firmly. But they are also considered to be a good omen in the Nara Prefecture, as the Yosuzume's chirping would warn that an Okuri-Inu is nearby.

In the Ehime Prefecture, the Yosuzume are said to be a type of moth said to fly so fast that one cannot walk along the road at night, acting as a premonition of mountain dogs.
