Yukinko (雪ん子 Yukinko, lit. Snow Child) is the child of Yuki-Onna and Yuki-Otoko.

Appearance[]

She is nearly always seen holding her ice candy, which contains the souls of those she has frozen. In the third anime, it appears to be an ice shard, but in the first and fourth anime, it appears to be an ice pop.

Personality[]

In the manga and 1968 anime, Yukinko acts like a normal, mischievous young girl, often asking others to lick her ice candy. Yukinko notably teases Nezumi-Otoko and cries after getting hurt in the 1968 anime.

In the 1996 anime, she saved Kitarō despite it being against her parents' will, after asking Kitarō if he had ever killed wildlife, and knowing he would have never done such crimes. As such, her more sensitive side is shown.

History[]

Manga[]

Yukinko first appeared in the Shonen Magazine story, Yukinko. She lived with Yuki-Otoko and Yuki-Onna, capturing people's souls in Daisetsuzan, Hokkaido, and trapping them in an ice candy she licks while freezing their bodies. She lures Kitarō as a normal child, but after he melts his way into unfreezing himself, she later fuses with her parents, but gets melted.

Yukinko also appeared in Saishinban GeGeGe no Kitarō, first appearing in the story, The Yōkai Seven Mysteries, in the crowd in the great yōkai meeting held by Nurarihyon. He is one of Hyakki Yagyō-Shū led by Yagyō-san. She also appears in the story, The Revived Yōkai Army's Counterattack!, being one of the many villains revived by Nurarihyon using the Yōkai Kōro, but was defeated by a Wanyūdō. She also appears in the crowd of Boze's sumo tournament in the Kitarō Kunitori Monogatari story, Yōkai Sumo.

1968 Anime[]

In this adaptation, she was first seen teasing Nezumi-Otoko, and later froze his body and sucked out his soul. She later gets carried on Kitarō's back, but was thrown off after she was revealed to be a yōkai, and was later melted by his Yōkai Radiation ability. Her and the rest of her family's melted bodies merged into an ice giant, but were seemingly buried under the cave they were in.[1]

1985 Anime[]

1996 Anime[]

Yukinko appears in episode # 58 of the fourth anime adaptation, Freezing Yōkai: Yukinko!. In this adaptation, her and her family now live in Ginsetsuzan, and went after the poacher husbands of the village housewives, and left a spare popsicle stick while doing this. She was first seen asking Nezumi-Otoko to lick her ice candy, but ran off after being bullied by him. She later puts her ice candy into Nezumi's mouth herself, as he goes outside to look for the missing villagers. At night, she walks back home at night, Kitarō following her, and her and her family manage to succeed in freezing him. However, she secretly melts Kitarō, since she didn't recognize him as poacher. This causes conflict with Yuki-Onna, and she tries to convince her not all humans are bad, but after she gets rejected, Kitarō is left with no choice but to defeat them. Yukinko doesn't want her parents to die and so sacrifices herself to hug Yuki-Otoko one last time.

Ice Candy: Yukinko often holds an ice candy that, when licked by others, freezes them and transfers their soul into them.

Blizzard Breath: Like the rest of her family, Yukino can spew a breath from her mouth, capable of freezing opponents.

Ice Giant (冷凍巨人 Reitō Kyojin): In the manga, 1968 and 1985 anime, Yukinko and her parents were able to merge into an ice giant after they were melted.

Legend[]

Yukinko are said to be the children of Yuki-Onna. They are commonly depicted as a child wearing a straw hat and a mini cape.

Similar to stories of the Ubume, a Yuki-Onna would appear on snowy nights and ask passersby to hold onto her child. The child was extremely cold as if the person was holding snow, so they would soon freeze to death from carrying the Yukinko for too long.
